New York Times stated on Wednesday that four of its reporters went missing on Tuesday, while covering fighting in the port town of Ajdabiya.

“Their families and their colleagues at the Times are anxiously seeking information about their situation, and praying that they are safe,” said the paper’s executive editor, Bill Keller.

Since the uprisings began in the Arab world, journalists’ lives are more at risk than ever, especially in the Middle East and some African countries.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has recorded more than 40 attacks on journalists, including 25 detentions, five assaults, and two attacks on news facilities.

Journalists from the British newspaper, the Guardian, Al-Jazeera based in Qatar, the BBC, and others, have been abused, detained, or gone missing, according to CPJ.

Last week, three BBC journalists survived a detention stay in Libya after being beaten and psychologically abused by pro-Moammar Gadhafi forces.
