Four men were convicted and sentenced on Thursday for their plot to detonate explosive devices in Germany. The men were attempting to blow up nightclubs, airports, and a U.S. base near Frankfurt.

They were handed sentences of between 5 and 12 years each, according to the Times of London. Two Germans, a Turk, and a German man of Turkish origin were part of the crew. The men were aiming for maximum fatalities in the planned attacks.

Three of the four men were members of the Islamic Jihad Union, a group outlawed in Germany, which allegedly has connections to al-Qaeda. The bombing, if successful, would have been one of the worst terrorist attacks on German soil in the nation’s history.
