Five former inmates of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility arrived in Europe on March 23 and 24. Three of the former inmates from Middle Eastern descent were transferred to Georgia where they will be allowed to live free, and two Uyghurs from China’s Xinjiang region were granted asylum to live in Switzerland.

The Chinese leadership has protested against the Uyghurs being granted asylum, saying it would “surely undermine” relations between China and Switzerland.

On Monday the U.S. Supreme Court said that “the government has declared its policy not to transfer a detainee to a country that likely will torture him,” and made it clear that the Uyghurs would not be send to China. Beijing has argued that the two men are suspected ”terrorists” from an Islamist group in Xinjiang and should be repatriated.
