U.S. and French ambassadors in the City of Daraa for a memorial of killed Syrian activists
Several foreign diplomats traveled to attend a memorial for a killed Syrian activist in a city near the capital, Damascus, according to media reports.
The ambassadors of the United States, Japan, and France appear seated at a ceremony to show support for the protest movement, according to Al-Jazeera television, who obtained photos of the event.
A Japanese Embassy spokesperson told the television station that its ambassador to Syria, Toshiro Suzuki, was at the memorial, which commemorated activist Ghiyath Matar, who was recently shot and killed by Syrian security forces.
Video footage uploaded to Youtube showed what appears to be the three ambassadors sitting in the front next to one another.
The memorial comes just a day after the United Nations said that 2,600 people have been killed in the Syrian crackdown, which began around six months ago. Some opposition activists have said that at least 3,000 have been slain.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Syrian security forces have continued launching assaults on several cities. Since Monday, it estimates, 22 people have been killed in the cities of Hama and Homs, and in Deir Ezzor Province.
