Florence Nightingale, the famed nurse, was celebrated this year during Nurses Week.

Among the events that commemorated Nightingale’s life was one  at Westminster Abby on May 7.

The service is held annually to celebrate nursing and midwifery and all the staff working in these services, but this year was special with its commemoration of Nightingale.

Other areas where Nightingale was remembered included India, where President Pranab Mukherjee presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards to nursing personnel on International Nurses Day.

“Nurses are the largest workforce in the healthcare industry in India. Nursing services and capacity building have expanded considerably since Independence and their roles and responsibilities have multiplied over the years,” he said, reported ABP

Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing. She lived from 1820 through 1910 and helped reform the medical industry in England. The International Nurses Day is celebrated on her birthday.

Nightingale also wrote a lot and her work helped spread knowledge of the medical field. She wrote in simple English so that even those who couldn’t read well could understand.
