It’s been one week since the disappearance of 9-year-old Carlie Trent from Rogersville, Tennessee; and now her father, James Trent, says Carlie’s uncle and alleged kidnapper was “obsessed” with her and “wanted her all to himself,” according to an interview with Local 8 News.

“He had access to her everyday, every single day, it just makes me even think further, that he was just obsessed with her, I mean he wanted her and wanted her all to himself,” her father said. “That’s a scary thing to think about.”

The interview also shows how closely the two households lived to each other—the distance between Gary Simpson’s and his wife Linda’s place was just a stone’s throw away from the Trent family.

When asked about how he feels things will be when Carlie is found, Trent said: “It would be a great moment but then again its going to be a scary moment because I’m just wondering how she’s going to be? Is she going to be as happy as she was? Is she going to be scared to death of every body? Will she even want to come back? That’s what I worry about, she just won’t be the same.”

Carlie was signed out of her Rogersville, Tennessee school during the afternoon hours on May 4 by her uncle, who has no current custodial rights to Carlie.

Just a few days prior to the kidnapping, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI) reported that Gary Simpson shopped at a Walmart store and purchased clothes for himself and a number of items presumed to be for Carlie:

  • Blue and orange striped blanket
  • Khaki pants
  • Pack of underwear
  • Two shades of nail polish (purple and sparkling green)
  • Two shades of lipstick (purple and green)
  • Pink child camp chair
  • Purple child night gown with stars
  • Black and pink and white bikini swimsuit

The TBI obtained surveillance footage of Simpson buying the items:

And on the day she was taken, new footage has surfaced of Simpson buying groceries and other supplies inside a Save-A-Lot store; in the surveillance, Carlie seems to be acting normally and unafraid of Simpson.

So far, the TBI has said they received over 500 tips in response to the statewide AMBER alert, but none proving to be credible.

Carlie is 4 foot 8 inches tall, weighs 75 lbs with blonde hair and blue eyes, and was last seen wearing a black and grey tank top and blue jeans.

Simpson is a white male, 5 foot 10 inches tall, weighing 157 lbs. He is balding, has brown hair and eyes, and was last seen wearing a brown cap, a dark colored shirt and jeans.

Josh DeVine, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) public information officer, said people need to call 911 immediately if they see the van. It has the registration plates 173-GPS and can be seen below:
