CALGARY, Canada—Calgary’s Southern Jubilee Auditorium came alive with the sights and sounds of China on Sunday afternoon as Shen Yun Performing Arts kicked off the first of three shows in the city.
Two friends, artist and fashion designer Irina Lizicasz and fashion designer Liliih Belcz, were thoroughly impressed with the performance and its portrayal of traditional Chinese culture.
“I think it’s very beautiful. Lots of colour, beautiful costumes. I think it’s nice, something different and unusual,” said Ms. Lizicasz during the intermission.
“I like the colour. I like the costumes very much.”
She added that Shen Yun’s unique animated backdrops were “something new” for her.
Based in New York and composed of primarily ethnic Chinese performers, Shen Yun is currently touring the world showcasing the Middle Kingdom’s history and culture through classical Chinese dance and music.
“On the stage, I think it’s very smart and a very artistic combination,” said Ms. Lizicasz.
Although Shen Yun has played in Calgary several times before, it was both women’s first time seeing the performance.
Ms. Belcz was impressed by the dancers’ facial expressions and fluid movements as they performed the difficult moves of classical Chinese dance, an art form passed down from ancient China.
“It’s very soft, very flowing movements of the body. This is what I like the most. And of course the costumes and the combination of the colours. And the group dances are amazing, because they are so coordinated, so in rhythm, so synchronized. That’s very impressive for me.”
Ms. Lizicasz said she thought the costumes were “very representative of the culture of China.”
“The colour, the combinations, and the movement, just go together very nice.”
