Afghanistan-born Latifi returned to live in Kabul from the United States in 2013. He now faces a very altered way of life in his birth city. “The fear exists that one day they’ll come to my house or one day they’ll just stop me on the street, and I don’t know what they’ll do.”
Latifi says he doesn’t want to be “driven out” by the Taliban, while acknowledging others don’t have the luxury, as he does, of being able to leave. He describes hundreds engaged in a desperate standoff with U.S. forces, trying to enter Kabul airport.
“I want to try and continue to tell the story of this place. And … try and last here as long as I can, but I honestly don’t know how long that will be.”
