Country music legend Randy Travis continues to inspire fans more than a decade after suffering a near-fatal stroke, with his wife, Mary, recalling the moment she chose to ignore doctors’ advice to end life support.

In an interview with Fox News, Mary said physicians warned her in 2013 that Travis was too weak to recover after contracting multiple infections in the hospital.

“They said, ‘We need to pull the plug. He’s got too many things going against him,’” she recalled. Despite low vitals and grim odds, Mary said she saw a clear sign that her husband was still fighting. “That was the moment I knew Randy Travis was gonna make it because he squeezed my hand and a tear went down his face. And I said, ‘He’s still fighting.’”

Rejecting the doctors’ recommendation, Mary stood firm, telling medical staff they would keep pushing forward.

“And I meant that, and Randy meant it. And I knew at that point in time, because he had every odd in the world against him, and he wasn’t giving up,” she said.  “And I was so encouraged by that to be honest, he was my inspiration.”

Travis, now 65, suffered the massive stroke in July 2013 after being hospitalized for viral cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. He underwent brain surgery and faced less than a 1 percent chance of survival.

The stroke left him with aphasia, limiting his ability to speak and sing, but over time he relearned how to walk with assistance and has continued to find ways to connect with audiences.

Earlier this year, the Grammy-winning artist shared major career updates during a surprise appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. Nearly 39 years after his debut at the Nashville stage, Travis announced plans for a biopic titled “Forever and Ever, Amen!”
He also confirmed that his “More Life Tour” is underway, featuring more than 40 stops across the country with his longtime band and guest vocalist James Dupré.
Travis has also embraced artificial intelligence in his music, using archived recordings of his voice to help produce new songs. In 2024, he released “Where That Came From,” his first new music since the stroke, a moment his wife described as deeply emotional.
Through the health challenges and career reinvention, Mary has been a constant presence at her husband’s side. She married Travis in 2015 after decades of friendship. She has often spoken about their faith as central to his recovery. “There’s no way we could have gotten through what we got through without our faith,” she told Rolling Stone in 2020.
