George Clooney and his family have been granted French citizenship, according to an official naturalization decree recently published by the French government, marking a significant personal milestone for the Oscar-winning actor and his wife, human rights attorney Amal Clooney.

The decree confirms that Clooney, 64, Amal, 47, and their 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, are now French citizens. The move formalizes a transition the family has gradually made in recent years as they established France as their primary home.

Clooney has spoken publicly about his family’s life in the French countryside and the reasons behind the decision to raise their children there. In recent interviews, he emphasized privacy, quality of life, and distance from Hollywood culture as major factors.

“You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it.” Clooney said in an October interview with Esquire. “But now, for them, it’s like—they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

The actor has also expressed concern about raising his children in Los Angeles, citing the pressures associated with fame and constant media attention.

“I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood,” Clooney said. “I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life.”

French privacy protections, particularly those shielding children from paparazzi, have played a central role in the family’s decision.

Clooney previously praised France’s approach to media intrusion, saying, “France—they kind of don’t give a [expletive] about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi.”

“Here, they don’t take photos of kids,” he said. “There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us.”

The Clooneys purchased a country estate in southern France in 2021, a former wine property near the village of Brignoles.

Beyond France, Clooney owns property in England, Italy’s Lake Como region, and Kentucky, where much of his family remains.

Clooney is one of Hollywood’s most accomplished figures, with a career spanning acting, directing, and producing. He has won two Academy Awards, one for best supporting actor in 2005’s “Syriana” and another as a producer on 2012’s “Argo.”
