Kit Harington’s candid revelations about his diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its transformative impact on his life took center stage in a recent podcast episode of The Hidden 20%. In the episode, the 34-year-old actor not only opened up about his ADHD diagnosis but also delved into a range of challenges, including his struggles with alcoholism, social anxiety, and broader mental health issues. Mr. Harington, known for his role in the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” expressed gratitude for the timing of his ADHD realization and the pivotal role it played in reshaping his life.

During the podcast interview with Ben Branson, the founder of the non-alcoholic beverage company Seedlip, Mr. Harington shed light on the profound impact of his mental health struggles, particularly during his tenure on Game of Thrones. Despite projecting an image of sophistication and coolness, he admitted feeling terrified and faced challenges in coping with public opinions during the show’s immense popularity. The actor described navigating a “dangerous rabbit hole” of reading both negative and positive comments online, eventually leading to what he termed a “breakdown” post the show’s conclusion.

Mr. Harington’s turning point occurred later while starring in True West in London’s West End in 2018 and 2019. Confronting personal challenges, he chose to open up to those around him and took decisive action. Reflecting on his recent stint in rehab, coupled with the ADHD diagnosis, Mr. Harington revealed how these experiences contributed to his sobriety and improved presence with his two children, whom he shares with Game of Thrones co-star Rose Leslie. Despite acknowledging the positive impact, Mr. Harington admitted that ADHD still presents challenges, describing how his mind tends to wander in various directions simultaneously.

The actor emphasized notable improvements in his anxiety and overall mental health post-rehab. Additionally, he shared a coping mechanism suggested by his wife, involving taking a shower during moments of mental “freeze” to reset his brain and start each day afresh.

Research conducted by The Gateway Foundation brought attention to the link between ADHD symptoms and increased risks related to alcohol consumption. The analysis revealed that even without a formal diagnosis, individuals with ADHD are more susceptible to early alcohol use, engagement in binge drinking during early adulthood, and an elevated risk of developing alcohol use disorder in adulthood. The study highlighted the misconception that alcohol serves as a temporary solution for ADHD-related restlessness and anxiety, emphasizing that heavy consumption can exacerbate ADHD symptoms and impede the effectiveness of certain ADHD medications.
Mr. Harington’s journey aligns him with a growing list of Hollywood celebrities who have chosen to embrace a sober lifestyle. Kelly Osbourne, after admitting to a relapse in April 2021, acknowledged her struggle and commitment to getting back on track. Osbourne explained during a June 2021 appearance on Red Table Talk how the COVID-19 pandemic triggered her relapse.

Overcoming Addiction

Demi Lovato, a former Disney star, has also navigated a path to recovery. After entering rehab in 2010, Ms. Lovato sought treatment and experienced six years of sobriety before a near-fatal drug overdose in 2018. Ms. Lovato emphasizes the need for individualized solutions, stressing that what works for one person may not be effective or safe for another, in an interview with Glamour magazine.

Liam Payne, a former “One Direction” band member, shared his joy at being sober, expressing gratitude for the support received from fans. Additionally, actor Rob Lowe took a moment to celebrate his son John Owen’s five-year sobriety milestone on The Drew Barrymore Show in April 2023. Mr. Lowe stated he was 33 years sober.

Other actors who have publicly disclosed their struggles with alcohol and their subsequent recovery include Avatar star Sam Worthington, Harry Potter actor Tom Felton, lead singer of Florence and the Machine Florence Welch, and Hayden Panettiere.

Hollywood heavyweights Bradley Cooper, Tom Holland, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jessica Simpson, Eminem, and Robert Downey Jr. have openly discussed their journeys to sobriety, offering insights into their decisions and experiences.

Bradley Cooper, known for his roles in “A Star Is Born” (2018), revealed in a 2013 interview with GQ that he chose sobriety to avoid sabotaging his life. Reflecting on his portrayal of a musician struggling with addiction in the same film, Cooper described the experience as cathartic, emphasizing the use of personal experiences in storytelling.

In 2023, during an episode of “Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge,” Mr. Cooper expressed gratitude for overcoming his addictions and how sobriety positively influenced his performance in “A Star Is Born.”

“Spider-Man” star Tom Holland disclosed his journey to sobriety during a podcast interview in July. After a reflective “Dry January” experience following a “very boozy December,” Holland recognized his dependence on alcohol. He committed to six months of sobriety and described the decision as the best thing he has ever done.

“Stranger Things” actor Jamie Campbell Bower shared his sobriety journey on social media, revealing he has been clean for over eight years. Campbell Bower acknowledged past mistakes and encouraged others, stating that every day is a chance to start anew.

Jessica Simpson decided to become sober to be present for her children. In a 2020 interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she discussed the impact of alcohol on her life and the clarity she gained after quitting.

Eminem, who celebrated over 10 years of sobriety in 2020, opened up about his past drug addiction in a 2022 essay. He highlighted the challenges he faced, including obtaining drugs like Vicodin, and spoke about the positive changes in his life after getting clean.

Alcohol Risks

Excessive alcohol consumption poses immediate risks linked to various harmful health conditions, primarily stemming from binge drinking. These immediate consequences encompass injuries, such as those resulting from motor vehicle crashes, falls, drownings, and burns. Additionally, violent incidents, including homicide, suicide, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence, are associated with excessive alcohol use.
According to the CDC, another critical concern is alcohol poisoning, characterized by a medical emergency triggered by elevated blood alcohol levels. Risky sexual behaviors, such as unprotected sex or engaging with multiple partners, are linked to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Pregnant women face the added risks of miscarriage, stillbirth, or the development of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) due to excessive alcohol intake.

In the long term, persistent excessive alcohol use can lead to chronic diseases and severe health problems. These include high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive issues. Various cancers affecting the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, voice box, liver, colon, and rectum are associated with prolonged alcohol consumption.

Weakening of the immune system increases susceptibility to illness, while learning and memory problems, including dementia and impaired academic performance, may emerge. Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are also linked to prolonged alcohol use. Social challenges, including family discord, job-related difficulties, and unemployment, can further compound the negative consequences of excessive alcohol consumption. Lastly, individuals may develop alcohol use disorders or alcohol dependence over time.

The journeys of Mr. Harington and other prominent celebrities shed light on the complexities of mental health, addiction, and the transformative power of embracing a sober lifestyle.
