Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for his role as Xander Harris on the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died. He was 54.
“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art,” the family said in the statement. “Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.”
The statement continued, “He was passionate, sensitive and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
Brendon rose to prominence in the late 1990s with his portrayal of Xander Harris, one of Buffy Summers’s closest friends, on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The series ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 and followed a group of teenagers navigating both everyday life and supernatural threats.
Though it received limited awards recognition during its original run, the show has since been widely cited by critics as an influential television drama.
After “Buffy,” Brendon continued working in television, including a recurring role as Kevin Lynch on “Criminal Minds.” He also appeared in the Fox sitcom “Kitchen Confidential” in 2005, an adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s memoir that starred Bradley Cooper.
His film credits included “Psycho Beach Party” (2000), “Coherence” (2013), “Redwood” (2017), “The Nanny” (2018), and “Christmas Slasher” (2024). In addition to acting, Brendon contributed as a writer to several issues of the Buffy comic book series.
“There were so many times I’d just be on set and in this place of wonder, saying, ‘Oh my God. I can’t believe I’m a part of this show,’” he said.
Reflecting on the moment he landed the role, Brendon added that receiving the phone call confirming his casting marked the beginning of a journey that continued to resonate decades later.
“I couldn’t afford a cellphone so I got a ‘911’ page from my manager, and I was actually heading out to Santa Monica. So I pulled over [and used] a pay phone,” he said. “She’s like, ‘Nicky, you got it.’ I’m crying and she’s crying. I had been acting for about three months up until that point, so that’s kind of where it started, and I had a talk with my twin brother, and he’s like, ‘No matter what happens, your life has just changed.’”
In 2023, Brendon disclosed that he had suffered a heart attack. He also underwent two spinal surgeries related to cauda equina syndrome, a rare condition involving nerve compression that can lead to pain, weakness, and mobility issues.
“I saw you Nicky,” she wrote. “I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
