Brendel’s final public performance was in 2008 at Vienna’s Musikverein, playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 and a solo by Liszt.

Alfred Brendel, the internationally acclaimed Austrian pianist known for his intellectual interpretations of classical works and a career spanning more than six decades, died peacefully at his home in London on Tuesday. He was 94.

According to the BBC, he was surrounded by his family, including his partner Maria Majno and his four children, Doris, Adrian, Sophie, and Katharina. He is also survived by his former wife, Irene, and four grandchildren.
