Several American shark experts are heading to Egypt to investigate a number of recent shark attacks that have left one tourist dead and beaches along the Red Sea evacuated.
Egypt has a number of resorts along the Red Sea, a popular tourist destination.
Shark attacks, historically, have been rare in the region—until last Sunday.
A shark bit off the arm of an elderly German tourist near the beach, killing her, according to the AFP report. That incident followed a string of other shark attacks—though none fatal—during the last few weeks.
Three U.S. experts are going to Egypt to advise a course of action. They are George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File; Ralph Collier, author of several shark books; and Marie Levine, head of the Shark Research Institute located in Princeton, N.J. Some environmentalists believe that overfishing in the area has caused the sharks to venture toward the shore.
