Early May Bank Holiday in the UK is on May 5 in 2014.

The Early May Bank Holiday falls on the first Monday of May each year. A bank holiday is a public holiday in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

All banks throughout the UK will be closed. ATM and Bureau de Change facilities will still be available.

Most workers get a day off, except for those in essential services (transport, health, police, etc), tourism, and retail.

Stores in central London will largely remain open.

Tourist attractions, such as museums and gallaries, will remain open.

The Tube and buses will follow a Sunday timetable.

A Tube strike will commence at 9:30 p.m. GMT, May 5, so services will be disrupted. Check out the Transport for London site for more details of affected services.

Most retail stores have shorter operating hours during the Bank Holiday. As the opening hours vary from place to place, it is advisable to check out the individual store’s hours before heading down:

Harrods: All stores 10 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Selfridges: 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
