DOE Talks to 20 Struggling Schools

September 29, 2011 Updated: September 30, 2011

NEW YORK—The Department of Education (DOE) began “early conversations” this week with 20 schools it identified as “struggling.”

Schools made the list just days after the 2010-2011 school progress reports came out. The schools all scored poorly on English Language Arts (ELA) tests and standardized Math tests. The schools were chosen not only based on these scores, but also on past progress reports, community needs, Joint Intervention Team reviews, and several other factors.

“The goal of these discussions is to gain a better understanding of where weaknesses in their educational strategy lie and why they are struggling,” explained Deputy Chancellor Marc Sternberg in a statement.

DOE informed elected officials in the schools’ districts, as well as the appropriate Community Education Councils (CEC) to keep them up to date on steps DOE might take to help these struggling schools, most of which are located in low-income neighborhoods.
