A Democratic Congressman suggested nuking America if gun owners resist gun seizures, following comments he made in an op-ed urging an assault weapons ban.

In the op-ed, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) argued that the government should force gun owners to sell their weapons to the government, and punish those who resist.

In his radical proposal, he says America “should ban possession of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons, we should buy back such weapons from all who choose to abide by the law, and we should criminally prosecute any who choose to defy it by keeping their weapons.”

In another part of the article, he said the government should “go after resisters.”

He said that the government could offer $200 to $1,000 to gun owners for each assault weapon.

The fringe opinion was slammed by many, including Newsmax host and former NYPD officer John Cardillo. Linking to an article about the op-ed, he wrote on Twitter: “Make no mistake, Democrats want to eradicate the Second Amendment, ban and seize all guns, and have all power rest with the state. These people are dangerously obsessed with power.”

Veteran Joe Biggs then added his own thoughts while sharing Cardillo’s tweet, saying: “So basically @RepSwalwell wants a war. Because that’s what you would get. You’re outta your [expletive] mind if you think I’ll give up my rights and give the gov all the power.”

Swalwell weighed in then, shockingly suggesting that gun owners could be nuked if they tried to resist the hypothetical assault weapons ban.

“And it would be a short war, my friend. The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they’re legit,” he said.

Biggs was one of many shocked by the brazen statement, replying: “So our government would nuke its own country in order to take guns? Wow.”

Backing Away

Swalwell tried to clarify his comments, saying: “Don’t be so dramatic. No one is nuking anyone or threatening that. I’m telling you this is not the 18th Century. The argument that you would go to war with your government if an assault weapons ban was in place is ludicrous and inflames the gun debate. Which is what you want.”

He later posted again, claiming that he was being sarcastic. “I sarcastically point out USA isn’t losing to his assault weapon (it’s not the 18th Century),” he said.

Radio host Joe Walsh said that he understood Swalwell was being sarcastic but wanted the possible presidential contender to understand gun owners’ point of view.

“Understand how many of us gun clinging Americans recoil at the word ‘confiscation’ and will do whatever we have to do to defend our guns against a government that would take them,” he said.
