Deaveon Brazil, 16, has been identified as the student at Spring High School in Harris County, Texas, who was airlifted to Hermann Memorial medical center Wednesday morning after being stabbed in his side. He was in critical condition, but his state was later upgraded to good.

My Fox DC spoke with the teen’s father, Oscar Brazil, outside the hospital.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said Brazil had undergone surgery. The Brazile family pastor joined Brazil’s parents outside the hospital to talk to reporters, saying the teen “will be OK.”

Joshua Broussard, another student at the school, did not survive the stabbing. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two other students sustained minor injuries in what was rumored to be a gang conflict.

Brazil’s pastor denied it was gang-related, saying it was “a misunderstanding that got out of hand” between people of different races—Hispanic and African American.

Garcia could not confirm or deny the conflict was gang-related. The Harris County Sheriff’s office reports that deputies have not been called to the school to address gang violence before Wednesday.
