It’s hard enough to compete on Dancing With the Stars for a regular contestant.

It’s even harder when you’re deaf—like Nyle DiMarco.

He’s been teamed up with Peta Murgatroyd all season, and has done a stunning job.

But their final dance was the most shocking yet, with the duo presenting a magnificent freestyle piece.

They earned a perfect 30 out of 30.

“I have to say, in 22 seasons, that is the best dance I’ve ever seen,” said Carrie Ann Inaba, one of the judges.

The duo’s final dance left many in tears—including Murgatroyd herself.

“It’s been three intense months and...I don’t know...,” pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd told PEOPLE with tears welling up in her eyes. “It’s been such an amazing experience that I know I'll always look back at and would do again in a heartbeat.”

DiMarco feels like he did his best and left people with insight into the deaf community.

“I think we couldn’t have had a better night. I think every week I’m able to bring my story out, and tonight it was really a personal story,” he told Us Weekly backstage. “The deaf community really goes through a lot, and I’m really trying to explain how to raise a deaf child, but we keep being ignored.”
