Dead Sharks Found Washed Up on Cape Cod Shoreline With ‘Cold Shock’

The cold snap in the United States may have caused the deaths of two thresher sharks, which were washed up along Massachusett’s Cape Cod Bay this week.

The sharks were likely “stranded due to cold shock,” according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in a Facebook post on Dec. 27.

The sharks were first spotted by passerby James Mullin, who took some photos of one dead shark, according to the Cape Cod Times. Mullin contacted the Center of Coastal Studies that determined it was a thresher shark.

After the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy visited the site on Wednesday they found the second shark.

Once the sharks have thawed the Conservancy will dissect them to further investigate why they died.

Its team collected “pounds of tissue that will be used to better understand these events,” it wrote in a second Facebook post.

The conservancy encouraged anyone who spots “something strange” to send a message, along with the location of the find.

The cold snap has so far brought temparatures plunging in several northern states, with waterfalls freezing and people suffering life-threatening frostbite.

On Tuesday, Dec. 26, a man in Cincinnati, Ohio, was found dead at a bus stop, with friends saying they believe he froze to death.
