A father from Massachusetts was forced to stab the family dog to death to stop it from attacking his 1-year-old daughter, according to police.
Falmouth Police Department responded to a call at approximately 8:54 a.m. on Jan. 7, from a home on Brick Kiln Road. A 1-year-old girl was being mauled by the family dog.
Police said the baby was playing in the kitchen when the unnamed father heard screaming and noticed that the family dog was attacking his daughter.
He immediately tried separating the dog from his daughter but was unable. He then tried shooting the dog but realized that his pistol was not loaded.
The quick-thinking father then grabbed a kitchen knife and began stabbing the dog in order to protect his daughter, ultimately killing the animal.
The family had owned the dog for five years. According to a preliminary investigation, the attack was unprovoked. The dog had no known history of violence or aggression.
Ron Goulart, the father’s uncle who lives across the street from the family, said dogs usually got along with the 1-year-old girl.
The little girl was airlifted to Boston Children’s Hospital and underwent a number of emergency surgeries, reported the news station.
Her family is grateful that she is alive.
The attack is currently being investigated by the police and the Falmouth Department of Marine & Environmental Services, Animal Control Division.
