A tornado warning ended for northeastern Hartford County and northwestern Tolland County on Monday. A report in the afternoon said that a semi truck was blown off the highway.
The Weather Channel reported that the truck was “blown off I-91 (exit 44) and part of a sports dome blown off in East Windsor, CT,” noting that it may have been a “possible tornado,” according to its Twitter feed.
MassLive.com reported that the Wal-Mart near East Windsor was affected by the purported tornado, blowing over the truck. Three lanes of southbound traffic was blocked on Interstate 91.
The National Weather Service said the tornado threat ended at 2 p.m. but officials told residents to take cover and stay alert amid high winds, reported NBC Connecticut.
Glenn Field, with the National Weather Service, told the Boston Herald that the possible Windsor tornado was “pretty big.”
“It appears that there was a tornado. We’re going to take a look at the damage. There were trucks overturned and a car smashed into a Walmart... It hasn’t been confirmed that it was a tornado but whatever it was, it was strong,” Field told the paper.
The news comes as the National Weather Service is investigating whether a tornado touched down in New Jersey on Monday.
“It if wasn’t (a tornado) it was a hell of wind,” New Jersey resident Tom Mondelli told NJ.com.
The tornado may have touched down somewhere between Summit and Berkeley Heights.
