MONTREAL—Company owner and president Robert Brideau and his wife, interior designer Yvette Brideau, found different reasons to fall in love with Shen Yun Performing Arts at Place des Arts on Jan. 4.
“Wonderful storyline,” said Mr. Brideau, president of a Montreal-based security company. “It was nice to see the different aspects of Chinese culture.”
“The costumes are beautiful; the dancing is very nice,” added Mrs. Brideau.
World-renowned Shen Yun is a classical Chinese dance and music company that aims to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
According to the Shen Yun website, the performance takes the audience on a journey though China’s five-millennia civilization right up to the modern day, presenting story-based classical Chinese dance as well as ethnic and folk dance.
Mr. Brideau appreciated the show’s trilingual emcees, who spoke in English, French, and Chinese to explain the story behind each dance before it played out on stage.
“The two hosts are wonderful in terms of what’s playing and what’s going on,” he said. “Its very, very nice.”
Mrs. Brideau said the show left her feeling relaxed, adding that the use of colour in the performance was lovely.
“The colours are beautiful. The costumes are very nice, they are very colourful,” she said.
Mr. Brideau said Shen Yun helped them get a deeper understanding of the country’s history and culture.
According to the Shen Yun website, the show revives China’s divinely inspired culture that has been systematically destroyed over decades of communist rule.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s New York Company will play five shows in Montreal Jan. 3-6 and one show in Quebec City Jan. 8 before going on to Kitchener, Waterloo, and Toronto in its tour of eastern Canada.
