A Colombian airplane broke in three during a crash landing at a Caribbean island early Monday morning. Of the 131 people on board, 114 were injured but only one passenger died, from a probable heart attack.
Reuters reported that the Boeing 737 was struck by lightning 80 meters (about 262 feet) before making an emergency landing at Gustavo Rojas Pinilla Airport.
Colombian police said it was a “miracle” only one passenger died, according to Bloomberg.
“The pilot’s professionalism prevented the plane from going off the runway,” police Gen. Orlando Paez told Caracol Radio.
The passenger jet operated by local airline Aires left the Colombian capital, Bogotá, around midnight. It crashed at the popular tourist destination San Andreas about two hours later.
“The 68-year-old woman who died is thought to have died from a heart attack,” said Dr. Robert Sanchez at Amor de Patria Hospital where the injured are being treated, Reuters reported.
