China’s benchmark stock index declined Thursday to a 15-month low, on concerns regarding China’s economic growth and overseas demand for its products. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.1 percent, to 2,365 points, the lowest since last July.

The materials sector led all losses, including mining companies, as slumping demand for factory production domestically and abroad has put pressure on raw materials producers.

Markets in Hong Kong were closed Thursday due to Typhoon Nesat, which triggered a No. 8 warning in the city. The Hong Kong stock market, which is measured by the Hang Seng Index, could reopen on Friday.

All Chinese markets are closed on Monday to mark National Day.
