Hong Kong police have arrested a man who helped launch an online petition demanding government accountability for one of the city’s deadliest fires, drawing renewed scrutiny of how the National Security Law is being used to stifle civic activism.
According to multiple local media outlets, university student Miles Kwan was questioned by the Hong Kong Police National Security Department and later arrested after he started an online petition calling for an independent investigation into the blaze that engulfed a public-housing complex last week. The fire has killed 146 people, with the toll expected to climb.
