North Chicago Police said they are interviewing two “persons of interest” in the shooting and killing of 18-year-old Janay McFarlane, but had not filed charges as of early Feb. 18, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Mere hours before McFarlane’s death on Feb. 15, her 14-year-old sister sat behind President Barack Obama at her school, Hyde Park Career Academy. Obama finished his State of the Union address and visited the school, talking about ways to stop gun violence and his ideas for new gun legislation, while paying homage to 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, another young victim of gun violence on Chicago’s streets who was killed just days after she performed at Obama’s second inauguration.
According to the Sun-Times, Janay McFarlane attended Hyde Park but left the school because she became pregnant. Her son is four months old and is being cared for by her family in Chicago. McFarlane was prepared to graduate from an alternative high school this summer.
Joe McFarlane, the victim’s father, told the Chicago Sun-Times believes that his daughter was caught in the middle of gang-related gun violence and she was an innocent victim.
