At least 37 people were shot, five fatally, in Chicago over the weekend, according to reports on Monday.
The shootings occurred between the night of Friday, Nov. 11, and Monday, Nov. 14. They occurred as the Chicago Police Department deployed “targeted enforcement missions” to the city’s hard-hit South Side, reported the Chicago Tribune.
At least 675 people have been killed in Chicago during all of 2016—with the city on pace to surpass the 700-mark for the first time since 1998. Meanwhile, nearly 3,900 people have been shot this year. As the Tribune noted, during the equivalent weekend of November 2015, 18 people were shot and one was killed.
The most recent fatal shooting occurred on Monday morning in the Brighton Park neighborhood located on the South Side, NBC Chicago reported. A 26-year-old man was found by officers lying wounded on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
On Sunday night, police responded to shots in the South Shore neighborhood, finding a 25-year-old man unresponsive and wounded. The unidentified man was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, police said.
Another man was killed early Sunday morning at 1:59 a.m. On the West Side, a 31-year-old man was gunned down in the East Garfield Park at 3:21 a.m. Saturday, and another 31-year-old man was shot and killed in the West Lawn neighborhood after 2 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The Chicago Police Department said enforcement teams from the Cook County sheriff’s department, Illinois State Police, and the FBI were called into three districts. They include Gresham District on the South Side as well as the the Ogden and Austin districts on Chicago’s West Side, according to the Tribune.
