Chelsea emphatically destroyed relegation-bound Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Wednesday 5–0 with two goals each from Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda.

With the win, Chelsea vaulted over Arsenal and into second place in the English Premier League, one point behind leader Manchester United. Arsenal lies one point back of Chelsea. The three title contenders have now played 31 games.

The five-goal win was very important as goal differential could be a crucial decider in the title race.

Portsmouth goalie David James, lived up to his nickname “Calamity James” with a bad mis-kick error that gifted Drogba the game’s first goal after half an hour of play.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, whose job is rumored to be in jeopardy if no trophies are won, faced off against former Chelsea manager Avram Grant. Grant was in charge of Chelsea after Jose Mourinho’s departure.

Chelsea, knocked out of Champions League last week by Inter Milan, face Aston Villa on Saturday followed by Manchester United the following Saturday.

The Blues also face Aston Villa in the FA Cup semifinal.

In other Wednesday Premier League action, Everton beat Manchester City 2–0 in Manchester. Aston Villa dropped two points in a 1–1 home draw with Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers beat Birmingham 2–1.
