Manchester United outclassed their lowly hosts, Aalborg of Denmark, 3–0 in Tuesday’s European Champions League action. New signing Dimitar Berbatov scored his first two goals for United while 18-year-old Rafael da Silva impressed in his debut for the reigning European champions. Wayne Rooney opened the scoring with his second goal in his last two games.

Aalborg, reigning Danish champions, knew they’d be in tough against Manchester United but they didn’t hold back. Aalborg played a direct, energetic style that had to rely on the counter-attack against a more skilled and experienced opponent. Aalborg’s coach is Bruce Rioch, who managed Arsenal prior to the arrival of Arsene Wenger.

Speaking of Arsene Wenger, one had to feel his “pep talk” prior to the game against Porto worked as Arsenal pounded the former European champions 4–0. Arsenal certainly wanted to make their shocking loss to Hull last Saturday a thing of the past and with two goals each from strikers Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor, the Gunners climbed to the top of Group G with four points. Porto fell to second with three points.

Things aren’t looking good for Celtic after they lost 1–0 to Spain’s Villarreal. Marcos Senna’s curling free kick was the difference. The Brazilian-born midfielder continues to shine after his outstanding performance in Euro 2008. Once Villarreal took the lead, they ran circles around Celtic and the result was never in doubt.

Manchester United and Villarreal head Group E with four points each. Celtic has one point and will now face Manchester United twice while Villarreal faces Aalborg twice.

Tuesday’s surprise result had minnows BATE Borisov take a two-goal lead on Juventus before Vincenzo Iaquinta scored two earning his team a draw. Bayern Munich fought back to earn a1–1 draw with French champion Lyon.
