WASHINGTON—Female congressional leaders are looking toward the future legislative session. The annual gala of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues (CCWI) was held on March 3 in Washington, D.C.’s grand Union Station to celebrate the impact of women in Congress. Seventy-six women serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and all are members of the CCWI.

The officials discussed issues important to women that will arise in the coming congressional session.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), co-chair of the CCWI, told over 400 guests that the caucus “will continue our work to reduce maternal deaths and combat sex trafficking and violence against women and girls.”

Schakowsky added that women compose half the workforce and own 8 million businesses nationwide.

“The Caucus is working to ensure that Congress ... eliminates barriers faced by female workers and business owners.”

The event was hosted by Women’s Policy, Inc., a nonpartisan organization that conducts research and provides information with legislative analysis, issue summaries, impact assessments, and educational briefings on Capitol Hill. The CCWI can claim some significant past legislative accomplishments—the Women’s Business Ownership Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, and Violence Against Women Act.

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), vice chair of the Caucus, said that over 471,000 women are serving in the active military and reserves, and a number of these are in Iraq or Afghanistan.

“Looking out for our women in the armed services, and helping address their unique needs, is a commitment—and a duty—we all share,” Moore said. Moore noted gender inequality in health, especially among women of color.

The CCWI has set up several task forces such as Women and the Economy/Business, Women’s Health, Women in the Military/Veterans, Violence Against Women, Young Women, International Women’s Issues, and Education. The co-chairs and representatives from the above named task forces laid out their agendas for the 111th Congress.

The bipartisan CCWI was founded on April 19, 1977.
