Cargill Recalls 15 Tons of Ground Beef Over Salmonella

Agriculture giant Cargill is voluntarily recalling nearly 15 tons of ground beef due to a possible contamination from salmonella.

It said the products that face contamination were produced at its plant in Wyalusing, Pa., according to a statement released late on Sunday.

The beef that was recalled involves 85 percent lean ground meat product that was repackaged and sold by Hannaford Supermarkets, which has locations mainly on the East Coast. The meat’s use-by date has already passed and is not being sold in retail stores, but the recall was initiated because customers may have kept it in their freezers.

Hannaford told its customers to check their freezers for beef that has “use or sell by” dates between May 29 and June 19, saying it would offer a refund for returned products.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said there was a multistate outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis (SE)—the same strain that Cargill said tainted its ground beef—involving 33 patients. The agency said the strain is not antibiotic-resistant.
