NEW YORK—Dog lovers rejoice—owning man’s best friend in the Big Apple just became easier as registration turns cyber.

The long, tedious process of filing dog ownership application by paper is no longer mandatory as the city moves on to provide dog lovers with the option of filing online. The announcement was made by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday at Hillside Park Dog Run in Brooklyn.

The new online system is designed to cut the application wait time by half—from one month to only 10 to 14 days.

“Now, New Yorkers will be able to renew or obtain dog licenses quicker they have before,” said Bloomberg.

Dog owners are legally required to register their pets annually. However, only 20 percent of the 500,000 dogs in the city are estimated to be licensed. The city hopes that the new system will encourage owners to register their dogs.

“Licensing your dog has never been so simple,” said Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden. “A license can help keep your pet safe and healthy - and it’s required by law. We urge all New Yorkers to tag their pet online today.”

“Being a good pet owner means licensing your dog as soon as you bring him home,“ said New York City Animal Care & Control Executive Director Charlene Pedrolie. ”More and more New Yorkers are adding pets to their families, and thanks to this site, doing the right thing for your dogs are even easier.”
