Thieves tried to enter a Los Angeles jewelry store by breaking through six walls in the early morning hours of March 25, according to the shop owner.
Los Angeles police responded to a burglary alarm at about 1:50 a.m. at 9927 Topanga Canyon Boulevard near Lassen Street in the neighborhood of Chatsworth, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
The suspects were gone when officers arrived, but an investigation into the attempted break-in is ongoing, an LAPD spokesman told California Insider.
“It looks like the point of entry was a tunnel into the business,” Officer David Cuellar said.
The owner of Denny Lesser Jewelry at the Topanga Canyon Plaza reportedly told Los Angeles police he was working inside the store when someone was tunneling into his business to try to burglarize it.
Once inside, the suspects tunneled through a brick wall of another business to try to reach the jewelry store, according to the news station.
Beauty salon owner Sarah Shafik told KTLA the thieves used sledgehammers to break a hole into the salon’s bathroom during the attempted burglary.
“Like making a tunnel from store to store until they reach the jewelry store,” Ms. Shafik said.
Another business owner said the suspects broke through six walls with the sledgehammer, according to the report.
A surveillance camera captured an image of a person wearing a parka walking in the back of the building and a silver SUV, which sped away through the alley behind the building.
Nothing was taken at the jewelry store and no arrests have been made.
