Volkswagen Group of America and Porsche Cars North America are recalling more than 530,000 vehicles due to software errors that could prevent the rearview camera image from displaying properly.
Volkswagen is recalling certain 2019 through 2026 Audi vehicles, and the number affected is estimated to be 356,649, according to a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Jan. 6. Included among the 18 models listed are the 2020 to 2026 A6 All Road, the 2020 to 2024 E-Tron Sportbacks, the 2022 to 2026 E-Tron GTs, the 2021 to 2026 RS 6 Avants, and the 2022 to 2026 RS E-Tron GTs.
A similar recall by Porsche is estimated to affect 173,538 vehicles. This includes 2020 to 2025 Porsche Taycans, 2024 and 2025 Porsche Panameras, 2025 Porsche Panamera E-Hybrids, 2019 to 2025 Porsche Cayennes and E-Hybrids, and 2020 to 2025 Porsche 911 models.
In both cases, drivers of affected vehicles may notice that the rearview camera image does not display when reversing. Owners who experience this are being warned to use extra caution when reversing and make an appointment at their local dealer as soon as possible.
According to the NHTSA, affected vehicles would fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for “rear visibility.” A rearview image that does not display correctly reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident.
Notification letters are expected to be mailed out to potentially affected Audi owners by mid-February, and Audi dealers will update the software free of charge.
The Audi recall number is 90TV, and owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Vehicle identification numbers (VINs) involved in this recall are searchable on NHTSA.gov.
Porsche plans to begin notifying owners of affected vehicles by mid-January, and local dealers will provide all software updates free of charge. The manufacturer’s recall number is ASB2 and is also searchable on the NHTSA website.
According to Kelly Blue Book, Volkswagen Group of America recently recalled more than 89,400 vehicles, including the 2022 to 2024 Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro, due to cylinder head cover screws that may have been improperly tightened. Loose screws can allow oil to leak and increase the risk of fire.
An earlier recall involved some 60,400 Audi Q4 e-Tron and Q4 e-Tron Sportback 2021 to 2023 models involving faulty instrument panels. Some panels we found to be improperly displaying the transmission gear lever indicator, which could result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged.
An earlier Porsche recall reported by Kelly Blue Book affected nearly 31,700 Taycan vehicles from 2020 to 2025 and involved front brake hoses with cracks. Brake fluid leaks can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of an accident.
In another recent recall, some 27,500 Taycans from 2021 to 2024 were found to have malfunctioning batteries that could short-circuit, increasing the risk of fire.
