The U.S. labor market is sending mixed signals ahead of the April jobs report, with layoffs tumbling and unemployment claims surging.

Global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported on May 1 that planned layoffs declined month over month in April by 62 percent, to 105,441, though this was 63 percent higher than a year ago.
