A photo of a sign outside a Burger King in Ephrata, Washington, that says “Now Hiring - Must Be Mexican” was only up for a short while, but the message was put up by a disgruntled former employee.

The photo isn’t a hoax, and it was captured in 2013. Burger King in November said that the sign was edited by an angry employee who worked there over the summer.

“The sign in question was posted briefly last summer, without approval at a franchise-owned and operated restaurant. Please know the franchisee has informed us that the employee who posted and photographed this sign was immediately terminated as a result. The Burger King team is dedicated to diversity and inclusion,” the company said at the time.

When the photo and message went viral this week, there were some misleading statements attached to it. A number of people found the sign to be offensive, posting angry messages online.

It’s not clear why the photo and message started being circulated again.
