The young founders of Bureo Skateboards not only share their love for skateboarding and surfing but also their concern for the state of our oceans.

Millions of tonnes of driftnets trapping dolphins, whales, sharks and turtles

About half a million tonnes of tangled up fishing nets are dumped in the sea causing great damage to marine life.

Hundreds of thousands of sea species die each year entangled on these ghost nets, suffering a slow and painful death.

Positive Net

The social entrepreneurs not only have created the Bureo Skateboard, with an innovative deck made out of recycled nets, they have also built from scratch an infrastructure to recycle the fishing nets needed for their production.

Their initiative ‘Net Positiva’ provides net disposal points to fishing communities in Chile and it is the first of its kind.

Thanks to their successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, Bureo can now start production of their first prototype.

The ‘Minnow’ is a fish shaped 25” cruiser skateboard with an innovative locking feature that lets you hook and lock your board for stress-free storage.

It also features Satori wheels made of 30% recycled veggie oil and 100% recycled cores.

For every Bureo deck made, 30 feet of drift nets have been fished off the sea.

Bureo means ‘waves’ in Mapuche, the language of the native Chileans, and it is surely making waves across the globe.
