It’s a profound irony of life that tremendous adversity can often turn into the most triumphant success story.

Hardship need not dictate the future. In fact, if failure is harnessed with humility and determination, it can teach us some valuable lessons about ourselves and how we need to change ourselves to improve our lives, our inner strength, and our attitude toward others.

One man is on a mission to prove this theory, and his name is Dhar Mann.

Mann, a motivational speaker and entrepreneur, posted a fictional anecdote video on Facebook. The story is about a champion boxer named Rob who seems to be living the good life with fame, plenty of money, and a nice car. Rob is heading to his car in a parking garage—apparently heading home from a successful fight—when he has a chance encounter with a homeless beggar who approaches Rob sitting in his luxury automobile. Rob knows this man from a past encounter.

We suddenly flash back to the past, when Rob was a boy, and a fellow student named Mike is bullying him for being a nerd. “Maybe if you weren’t such a weakling, this wouldn’t happen,” says Mike, who knocks off Rob’s glasses and heartlessly crushes them under his foot. “See you later Rob the reject,” he adds.

Cut to the present and we see the tables have turned. Rob recognizes the beggar and calls him by his name, Mike. Mike suddenly recognizes “Rob the reject.” The situation unfolds, and it appears that Rob is about to deliver retribution, when Rob suddenly delivers not blows but a shocking response instead.

In a moving testament to how one man turned his misfortune into success, Rob explains to Mike why he won’t be serving any right hooks in the parking lot that night.

“Every time you beat me up, I would just sit and cry,” Rob explains. “I was so upset how much you hurt me. But then, I decided to learn how to defend myself, so I started practicing boxing because I never wanted to be so powerless again, and as time went on, I started getting good at it. Really good.

“In fact, I became one of the best boxers in the world,” he continues. “So, you see, I hated you for a long time and I was mad that you hurt me, but then I realized you actually helped me. Because of you, I learned how to fight and I became the champ that I am today.”

Watch Mann’s inspiring video below and witness Mike’s reaction to Rob’s empowering speech for yourself. The message is moving millions.

Since Mann posted his inspirational video on Facebook it has been viewed a phenomenal 17 million times to date. Viewers from around the world left thoughtful comments for the motivational speaker.

“The truth in your videos can be the change in people’s hearts,” wrote one person. “I will continue to pay it forward. God bless.”

“No matter how bad people treat you, always look on the bright side and still seek the goodness inside of you,” another viewer reflected.

Mann’s inspirational stories are more than the product of reading, research, and the imagination; Mann tells stories of overcoming adversity from personal experience.

“One minute I was living in a 4-storey Hollywood Hills mansion with nine exotic cars in the garage,” he explains on his Facebook page, “and the next minute I was flat broke, carless, and grateful to be sharing 300-square feet of living space with a friend.”

“Luckily, my breakthrough moments of reflection and understanding came right when I needed them most; while sleeping on a couch in a cramped studio apartment,” Mann continues. “That’s when I discovered having the right mindset is a critical component to achieving success.”

“Failure is not defeat,” Mann says.

We all get knocked down and make mistakes from time to time. The trick is to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and learn a life-changing lesson in the process. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
