The British Metropolitan Police Service issued a statement on July 27 claiming that they had arrested the LulzSec hacker “Topiary”, who they say is 19-year old man who was living in the Shetland Islands.
The operation was a “pre-planned intelligence-led” raid conducted by the Police Service’s Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) with the assistance of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA).
“Today’s operation is linked to PCeU’s ongoing investigation into network intrusions and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group,” said the statement.
A DDoS attack involves using a large number of computers infected with malware –called bots— to send massive amounts of load requests to targeted servers or websites in order to overload and incapacitate them.
Topiary is believed to have been responsible for running LulzSec’s Twitter feed and public correspondence.
The Police Service says they are also searching a residential address in Lincolnshire and questioning a 17-year old male that may be connected with the inquiry.
In June, another 19-year old male was arrested in Essex in connection with Lulzsec. The group claimed that teenager, Ryan Cleary, was not a member of the hacking team and had only hosted an IRC-server the group commonly used.
The LulzSec hacker group had been involved in a series of brazen attacks on various corporate and government websites and internet-linked networks over the past 3 months, leaking data from companies such as HBGary, Sony Corp, Fox, PBS, Nintendo, and numerous others.
Both LulzSec and “hacktivist” group Anonymous are a part of the hacking collective known as “AntiSec”, a movement designed to expose perceived corruption in government and business entities.
