2016 Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra
In 1869, Brahms presented his publisher with 10 of his most successful arrangements of Hungarian and Gypsy (Roma) style folk melodies. These piano duets enjoyed tremendous popularity throughout Europe and, eventually, beyond, bringing both Brahms and his publisher, Fritz Simrock, unexpected success. The works furthermore fostered a trend for publishers to push for similarly appealing, and lucrative, nationalist folk music. No. 5, which had been rearranged for orchestra, is the most famous of the set and arguably Brahms’s best-known work. The melody comes from “Bártfai Emlék” (“Remembrance of Bartfa”), a csárdás dance tune attributed to the German-Hungarian composer Béla Kéler.
