[xtypo_dropcap]A[/xtypo_dropcap] blizzard warning was issued by the U.S. National Weather Service, affecting New York City, Long Island, and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut on Dec. 26 and 27, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) statement. The blizzard warning is in effect from 6am Sunday to 6pm Monday EST.

The blizzard warning for Southern New England, specifically Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, is in effect noon Sunday to 6pm Monday EST, according to a separate statement.

“A major winter storm will impact the region from Sunday through Monday afternoon,” stated the NOAA. Hazards may include heavy snow, strong winds, “with considerable blowing and drifting of snow and near zero visibility at times.”

Drivers can expect “extremely dangerous travel conditions” due to the accumulating snow and strong winds. The blizzard is expected to begin early Sunday morning, first starting with light snow which may turn into sleet with variable temperatures in some areas. Expected snow accumulation is 11 to 16 inches. Whiteout conditions are expected, as well as road hazards with the high winds bringing down power lines, tree branches, and Christmas decorations, according to the agency.
