Alabama drivers were forced to walk as long as three miles on U.S. Route 280 in the snow after their vehicles were stranded in Birmingham on Tuesday afternoon.
Photos uploaded to Twitter showed miles of cars and people on the side of the road.
Many were forced to take shelter and stay in hotels after getting stranded for hours.
Some drivers walked about 4 miles in the snow, according to reports.
Reports say that snow blanketed the city in less than an hour on Tuesday.
There were school closings, large wrecks, and travel delays across the city.
Meteorologist James Spann of ABC writes: “Travel will become difficult across the southern half of Alabama late this afternoon and tonight due to bridge icing. Some black top roads could become icy and dangerous as well. Most South Alabama schools are closed today and tomorrow. Auburn University, Troy University, the University of South Alabama, and the University of West Alabama are all closed today.”
He added: “The snow will end tonight, and sunshine returns in full force tomorrow, but we stay very cold with a high only in the low to mid 30s.”
