Iranian Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery, was apparently released Thursday.
The International Committee Against Stoning and Execution (ICAS) said in a press release that the photographs of Sakineh put out by a media outlet in Iran called Press TV made it seem she had been released. The photo showed a woman who was identified as Ashtiani and her son at her home.
ICAS warned in the press release that reports of her release have not been confirmed by Iran and Iran’s agencies are publishing conflicting messages.
Germany-based ICAS was one organization that campaigned for her release. The organization published a ’thank you' note stating that if it is true it shows “when millions stand together they can save precious lives and stop the unthinkable.”
Ashtiani did receive 99 lashes for an illicit relationship in 2006, as previously reported by The Epoch Times and was convicted and sentenced to death by stoning, in 2007. Her son Sajjad Ghaderzadeh and lawyer Hootan Kian were both arrested and tortured.
