Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Monday underwent a procedure to drain excessive fluid from his spinal cavity, after not being able to walk steadily, according to the Bureau of the Royal Household. His Majesty, 83, has been hospitalized since Sept. 19, 2009, after developing a fever, lung inflammation, and fatigue.
Prior to treatment, the King’s health was considered normal. His appetite for food has been normal as well, according to the bureau.
King Bhumibol, whose regnal name is Rama IX, is greatly revered by his people with many fearing the country could fall into turmoil upon his death, given the recent history of political upheaval.
Bhumibol tops the list as the world’s longest serving current leader of 64 years with Queen Elizabeth II reigning for 57 years.
