It’ll be a women’s final that few could have predicted but the story is sure to make the underdogs happy.

Francesca Schiavone, the No. 17 seed, reached the final when her opponent, No. 5 seed Elena Dementieva had to retire due to a torn muscle in her left leg.

Schiavone had won the first set in a tiebreak before Dementieva decided she could not continue.

Schiavone becomes the first Italian woman to reach a grand slam final. In celebration, she bent down and kissed the red clay court.

Her accomplishment is proof that the women’s game is not just for youngsters. Schiavone will turn 30 later this month.

Schiavone has won all her matches easily in straight sets with the exception of her first round encounter and her semifinal victory. Her previous best showing at a grand slam event was reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the French Open.

Australia’s Samantha Stosur, the No. 7 seed followed up her incredible victory over top seed Serena Williams with a dominating performance against former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic 6–1, 6–2.
