Paul Pelosi, the husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), has been charged with a misdemeanor hit-and-run after allegedly striking a parked car in California on July 3.
According to a statement shared by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office on July 4, deputies determined Pelosi was driving a car that struck another vehicle that was legally parked on the shoulder of a roadway. The parked vehicle sustained major damage.
No injuries were reported.
Deputies responding to a call about the incident found Pelosi about a quarter mile away from the other vehicle with damage to the front of his own car. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said Pelosi acknowledged he hit something but did not know what or when, and had continued driving.
Pelosi, 86, did not test positive for any alcohol in his system, authorities said.
Deputies did not arrest Pelosi and, because there were no injuries, they let him on his way with a misdemeanor charge for leaving the scene of an accident. The sheriff’s office recommended the lawmaker’s husband to California’s Department of Motor Vehicles to determine whether he should be allowed to continue driving—a referral process that is common for older drivers.
The terms of Pelosi’s probation also required him to attend a three-month driving class and have an ignition interlock device or breathalyzer installed on his vehicle.
