What’s new in Apple’s latest desktop operating system?
During the WWDC 2014 keynote address in June, Apple announced and showed off OS X 10.10, also known as Yosemite, to Apple developers and the public.
Apple says that OS X Yosemite will be out in fall 2014, but hasn’t given a specific date. It will be free to download.
An OS X Yosemite beta was launched in early June to developers, and was limited to one million OS X Mavericks users.
Currently, the OS X Yosemite Developer Preview is in the third version. Some of the changes include a Dark Mode, a new QuickTime icon, improved font in the Notification Center and Safari Favorites Bar, redesigned Mail icons, iCloud preferences UI tweaks, and an Updated Time Machine UI.
The OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 4 is expected to be released on Monday, July 21, and according to 9to5Mac, the release is “fluid” and could be delayed to another date.
Also, 9to5Mac reports that Apple could be launching a public beta of OS X Yosemite later in July. Apple did mention that a public beta will be available some time in the summer.
The OS X Yosemite public beta will be the first public beta of an Apple operating system in more than a decade.
It should be noted that not all Macs will run OS X Yosemite. A quick guide is to see if your Mac can run Mavericks and Mountain Lion, because Yosemite has the same system requirements as those two versions.
