Dear Kathy,

We just bought our first home and I want a new living room set. Our old living room furniture is a mess. We have three kids and a dog  and they’ve destroyed my couches. The thought of carting our ripped and stained old furniture into our new place depresses me. We’re tapped out after the closing costs but we have a few thousand dollar leeway on our credit card. I want to charge the furniture but my penny pinching husband won’t even talk about it. I really want to make our house a home. What do you think??

Desperate for a New Couch

Dear Mom,

I feel morally and ethically bound to tell you that love is what makes a house a home, not furniture. That being said, I have 5 kids, two dogs, and a cat. Just imagine what my couch looks like...I’m equally desperate for some new living room furniture. Even more coincidentally, we may have married brothers. I’m not even going to suggest charging a new living room set - my guy would have a stroke.

Compromise is a good thing. Craigslist’s “free stuff” section and The Reuseit Network (reuseitnetwork.org) are both great places to pick up free furniture. Upgrade what you have and enjoy your new home. There is a French expression, “Don’t let the better be the enemy of the good.” I have learned to really appreciate good quality second hand furniture. It may not be exactly what I want, but it’s better than what I’ve got! Let me know what you find - text the pics, if you can.

Have a great day,

Kathy
