Massive air-bag recall: BMW has said it will recall 42,000 2002 and 2003 3 Series models over faulty airbags amid a massive recall from five other major automakers.
The other automakers have recalled some 3.4 million vehicles, reported the Detroit News.
BMW spokesman Dave Buchko told the News the company was not aware of “deployments or injuries related to this issue in any BMW.”
The recall was triggered after it was discovered that a faulty part were found in air bags made in Washington state around 10 years ago.
General Motors Co., Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co., and Toyota Motor Corp. have recalled around 3.4 million vehicles around the world. More than 1 million have been recalled in the United States.
All the companies used passenger air bags made by Takata Corp.
The defective air bags have an inflator housing that can rupture during deployment and send shrapnel flying into the vehicle.
The initial recall was announced last month in Japan, but BMW needed more time to determine which vehicles were affected.
BMW says it has had no reports of injuries because of the issue. It will contact owners and replace the air bags for free.
